Second Prize Winner
I Looked in the Mirror
I looked in the mirror today,
Hardly recognising the face before me,
The silver hair and wrinkled, weathered complexion,
Blue eyes that as year passed have seen so many changes.
Time has certainly added it’s own make up,
I have no regrets though, well none I can think of,
I’m not saying I have had the happiest of lives,
Nor the easiest of times, oh no that would not be right,
But there has always been enough food on the table,
A warm house to come in to from the cold,
Even though some of the clothes I wore,
Had seen much better days, on more than one body,
They still gave me protection from the elements.
I recall the many people I have known,
Each so different from the other in many ways,
The help received and given in troubled times,
The kind words of sympathy comfort and thanks
I remember you my darling so smart in your uniform,
Proudly saying you were happy to fight for your country,
Then the quiet moments as we reflected on the cost,
The friends and loved ones who did not return,
I remember our wedding as if it was yesterday,
We had no idea how long we would be wed,
Or whether you would die on some foreign shore,
I was one of the lucky one’s, you came home to me,
My happiest memories I have to say are of those tender moments,
When you would take me in your arms so reassuringly,
Then whisper in my ear those tender words of love
Making everything in the world seem so much better.
I recall each word you said as a tear trickles down my cheek.
Now in the evening of my life, I miss your smiling face,
But I know one day we will be together again,
We will once more hold hands as we laugh and sing together,
Where time can never erase our words of eternal love.
