Third Prize Winner The Holes in My Heart My heart has a hole in it not one not two but more than infinity. What is infinity you ask? It means NO end to the pain of missing, loving and struggling with the Murphy's Laws that work against you. The holes are like holes that you dig and dig and then dig some more. Holidays especially big ones. You missed them. The holes are in another place and you have no idea how to get there and no matter what words you partake or appease they don't respond. The holes make do. Infinity will have to wait. Because this heart is not giving up. Not for 2003 and certainly not for 2004. What about memories? They are nice. But you can't hold them. They are just in your head. or in your eyes. I want something in my arms where all the holes lay. Do these holes have names? Yes, they do. It's called holes. Plaster of Paris just don't do the job they fall out. The memories are like patchwork quilts. You just keep on stitching another patch. The fenceposts have nice little notches on them. Pictures are just material. These holes are living breathing creatures. I guess I will have to make do with carrying these holes in my heart until infinity or Murphy's Laws cease to exist.
